MA Students practice Human Rights Monitoring in Starlight Stadium Playtest

7 December, 2023

On 7 December 2023, Marine Constant, Human Rights Advisor and Capacity Building Coordinator, together with Christina Kelly, Assistant Project Officer, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), conducted a Starlight Stadium Playtest for students of the MA Programme in Human Rights and Sustainability and MA Programme in Politics and Security at the OSCE Academy.

At the beginning of the session, they told about the mission and role of the ODIHR, and discussed the acting definition of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). In addition, Marine Constant and Christine Kelly introduced the human rights monitoring cycle methodology and delved into its structure. Students learned from what steps it consists of as well as explored the overall framework of this methodology. Later, the experts provided information about the key principles that are followed in order to conduct the human rights monitoring.

In the aftermath, students were able to play and test the Starlight stadium- online educational game for HRDs. The game is based on a fictional scenario, consisting of 4 episodes which follow one narrative arc. Based on human rights monitoring methodology, the simulation game investigates human rights abuses at the Stadium construction site in fictional country, Balronia. The game's development, initiated in 2018, involved input from an Advisory Working Group consisting of HRDs working across the OSCE region.
