Alumni and Students expert their knowledge in Good Governance and Security Sector Reform

On 29-30 October 2022, the OSCE Academy hosted a workshop on "Good Governance and Security Sector Reform in Central Asia," with the participation of 20 students and alumni of the OSCE Academy from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The workshop was organized and led within the framework of the Extra-Budgetary Project “Support, capacity-building and awareness-raising for Security Sector Governance and Reform (SSG/R) within the OSCE: Phase II” of the OSCE Secretariat Conflict Prevention Centre’s Operations Service and with the support of the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), the Swedish government agency for peace, security and development, and OSCE Academy in Bishkek. The workshop was opened by Dr. Indira Satarkulova, Deputy Director of the Academy.

Over two days, together with five experts - Professor Laura Cleary, Director of Oakwood International Security, Fallckolm Cuenca, Senior Desk officer at the FBA, Fanny Wessner, Desk Officer for Security Sector Reform at FBA, Jovan Pavlovic, from Security Cooperation Department of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, and Francesco Mapelli, Project Assistant within the SSG/R Team of the OSCE’s CPC - participants explored the topic of Security Sector Governance and Reform (SSG/R), delved into the ways the OSCE promotes effective security sector governance in line with OSCE principles and commitments, and examined security sector governance in Central Asia. In particular, participants discussed with the trainers of the workshop the main security sector actors involved in security provision, management and oversight in the context of Central Asia; the importance of addressing the different security needs of women, men, girls and boys for stability and peace in their region; and the relationship between good governance principles and integrity of the security sector.
