Post-Graduate Students improve their Research Skills

18 July, 2018

A new week-long masterclass: Interviews as Method in the Social Sciences and Humanities was completed at the Academy on 13 July. The workshop was designed to strengthen the research skills of 10 post-graduate students of the social sciences and humanities, specifically training them in conducting, analysing and interpreting interviews. Conceived as an introduction into methods in qualitative social research, the masterclass focused on two types of interviews, and correspondingly, two approaches to collecting and analyzing data, giving young researchers in Central Asia a valuable special training.

The masterclass was led by Drs Barbara Christophe and Christoph Kohl. Dr. Christophe is a senior researcher at the Georg-Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, where she coordinates the research forum on memory cultures. At GEI she has conducted several projects on memory practices in the classroom covering a broad range of topics from socialism, the Cold War, World War I to the October Revolution and Europe and focusing on different regions in the post-Soviet space, Central Eastern Europe and Germany.

Dr. Christoph Kohl received his Ph.D. degree from the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg in 2010. He held a Research Fellowship at the Institute of Sociology at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Germany (including six months of fieldwork on returned refugees in Angola) in 2011-12 and another such fellowship in the Research Group ‘The Cultural Dynamics of Political Globalisation’ at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), Germany, on 2012-2016. He joined the Georg Eckert Institute as a research fellow in 2017. He has also worked as a consultant (GTZ, Global Integrity etc.) and political analyst (Africa Confidential).
