| NewsGCSP-OSCE Academy in Bishkek: an enduring partnershipJanuary 26, 2012 In support of the GCSP-OSCE Academy partnership Dr. Pal Dunay and Dr. Graeme Herd of the GCSP Faculty offered electives on the OSCE Academy Master of Arts in Politics and Security programme. This is a 13 month graduate programme which offers an interdisciplinary curriculum in political science and international relations with a focus on Central Asia (http://www.osce-academy.net/en/mainpoliticalscience/). Dr. Herd offered an elective entitled ‘Central Asia and China' and a public lecture entitled: ‘A New Cold War in Asia-Pacific: Implications for Central Asia?' Dr. Dunay offered two electives: ‘Multilateralism in Central Asia'; and ‘Multilateral Arms Control'. Both Dr. Herd and Dr. Dunay consulted several course participants on their planned MA thesis topics. The genuine commitment and interest of the participants during plenary presentations and the discussions that followed underscores the fact that this year's MA class in Politics and Security is of exceptional quality. Overall the visit left GCSP faculty with a very positive impression. This teaching is part of a broader and continuing commitment of the GCSP to the OSCE Academy. One practical and applied feature of the MA course at the OSCE Academy is their internship policy. Students have the opportunity to be interns at, for example, NUPI in Oslo, PIR Centre in Moscow, OSCE Secretariat in Vienna, SCO Secretariat in Beijing and the GCSP. As well as briefing this opportunity, GCSP representatives discussed the ITC-27/MAS-7 European Scholarship for Central Asia opportunity with the participants and conducted interviews with four candidates from among current students and alumni of the OSCE Academy. The GCSP traditionally awards one scholarship annual to a graduate of the Academy. Dr.Dunay and Dr. Herd also took the opportunity to hold a planning meeting with OSCE Academy Director Dr. Maxim Ryabkov (an ISP Associate Fellow) and Deputy Director, Violetta Yan, for the 5th "Central Asia Seminar" which will be held in Bishkek between 13-15 September 2012. The Central Asia seminar, which was initiated four years ago as a joint GCSP-OSCE Academy dialogue initiative, has become a regular forum of exchange for experts and policy makers on Central Asia, with over 50 participants present in 2011. This year the seminar will focus on hard security issues with a particular emphasis on the Afghan draw down and its strategic effects in Central Asia. The current sponsoring partners of this seminar are the GCSP, OSCE Academy, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NESA), and George C. Marshall Center for European Security (GCMC) and in 2012 the PIR Centre Moscow will join the organizers of the seminar. The GCSP is on the Board of Trustees of the OSCE Academy and has been involved with the Academy since its beginning in 2002.
