September 15, 2011

Public LectureThe Role of Political Leader in Promoting Change

Lector: The Right Honourable Kim Campbell, Prime Minister of Canada (1993), Member of Club de Madrid

Date: Thursday 15 September 2011, from 3.00 to 4.00 pm

Abstract:

Ms Kim Campbell speaks of her own experience as a political leader who made a great contribution to social change in Canada. Political leadership is essential for achieving change against cultural prejudice and neglect of the vulnerable. Women political leadership has always been essential in bringing about that dramatic shift that happened in Western democracies in regard to the position of the women in society. This resulted in greater protection against male violence and structural discrimination, as well as in a radically changed public discourse on gender.

Bio: Kim Campbell earned an honors B.A. degree in Political Science and an LL.B from the University of British Columbia in 1969 and 1983 respectively. From 1970-1973, Kim Campbell pursued Doctoral studies of Soviet Government at the London School of Economics.

Before becoming Canada's nineteenth Prime Minister, Ms. Campbell served as Minister of State for Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and as Minister of National Defense and Minister of Veterans´ Affairs. She was the first woman to hold the Justice and Defense portfolios, and the first woman to be Defense Minister of a NATO country.

In June 1993, Ms. Campbell was elected Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and sworn in as Canada's first female Prime Minister. After her tenure as Prime Minister, Ms. Campbell was the Canadian Consul-General in Los Angeles from 1996-2000 and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders from 1999-2003. She taught at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University from 2001-2004.

Ms. Campbell is a founding member of the Club de Madrid and served as its Acting President in 2002, Vice President 2003-2004 and Secretary General of the Club from 2004-2007. Ms. Campbell currently is a member of Board of Directors of the Club.

Ms. Campbell is Chair of the International Advisory Board of the Foundation for Effective Governance in Kiev and Chair of the steering committee of the World Movement for Democracy.
