19-23 June 2006 - Final Workshop on Media and Democracy

The OSCE Academy in Bishkek in co-operation with the Swiss based consultancy network Media4Democracy and Interbilim Centre conducted final training course for future trainers on media from 19 to 23 June 2006.

The training program consisted of 4 trainings and 3 of them have already been conducted in May 2005, and February 2006. Previous trainings have identified the participants for this final workshop; they are coming from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Successful participants should later multiply their expertise among their colleagues in Central Asia.

The objective of the training is to enhance the role of the media in democratic processes by helping local journalists, editors, and media owners provide fair, accurate and responsible coverage by:

Providing substantial basic knowledge on the role of media in a democratic/transitional society, and the concept of quality criteria of information (objectivity, balance, non-partisanship, and neutrality);
Analyzing the functioning of the main political institutions in the region, and the legal framework of election processes;
Promoting informal exchange among participants;
Establishing a network of regional trainers for journalists and editors;
Promote the idea of free and objective media;
Capacity building for Central Asian media outlets.

Moreover, young journalists and students from journalism faculties of different universities had a chance to listen to group presentations and take part in evaluation process.
